Arabic and Islamic NLP Studies

Arabic is one of the most common used languages in the world. It is our first language! One of the main objectives of the college of computing at Imam University is to serve Arabic and religious studies. 

Natural language processing is a field of AI that deals with written and spoken text. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following areas as listed in ACL journal:
 

Phonology and Morphology, Word Segmentation
Syntax, Tagging, Chunking and Parsing
Semantics
Multimodal Natural Language Processing
Discourse, Dialogue, and Pragmatics
Linguistic aspects of CL (corpus linguistic)
Summarization
Generation
Machine Learning for Language Processing
Machine Translation
Information Retrieval and Question Answering
Information Extraction
Spoken Language Processing (e.g., Spoken Term Detection, Understanding, Dialogue Systems)
Sentiment Analysis and Opinion Mining
NLP-enabled Technology
Document Categorization / Topic Clustering
Social Media Analysis and Processing
Language Resources and Evaluation Methods

Who can be a member?
  • - Active, motivated and willing to read, write and implement scientific ideas in the field. 
  • - We should meet weekly/ every two weeks to discuss progress and exchange new knowledge. Note at the first couple of meetings we can discuss other people works, such as survey and so on. 
  • - We may offer workshops on scientific writing or any useful tools. 
  • - the research group should be divided into small sub-groups each one has a new topic to work on and publish a paper within 6 months or so.  

How to be a member?
  • ​You should be a staff member of the college at imam university (we may accept people from other places later)
  • Send me your name, your interest, your recent CV (and if you already have a research group or not) - deadline is next Sunday 7 Feb 2016. 
  • We strongly encourage you to build-up your personal website at imamu website. It is easy and in English and Arabic. 
  • Your name and website will be on the research group website.
